The Canaanite Woman / La mujer cananea
Xenophobia, fear of foreigners or foreign things, seems almost a part of human nature. Grandparents may have come to this country fearing the new sights, smells, and places into which they were thrust. Only by trusting themselves and those who reached out to them were they able to survive. The wealth of each person’s ethnicity can, if allowed, enrich the entire community.
In a time when mass media attempts to create a homogenized culture, it can be refreshing to experience, the traditions, colors, foods, stories, music, and rituals of other cultures. To be truly Catholic is to be catholic, open to a universal church with its diversity of peoples and cultures. The Canaanite woman who approaches Jesus is a woman of deep faith and profound humility. She is not intimidated or turned away, even when Jesus insults her by referring to her people as dogs. Her love for her daughter is so profound that no remark will deter her. She models Jesus’ love for out of love, Jesus bore insult and injury. Jesus would not have expected a Canaanite woman to have anything of value to teach him, yet she is complimented by Jesus for her great faith.”
La xenofobia, el miedo a los extranjeros o a las cosas extranjeras, parece ser parte de la naturaleza humana. Nuestros abuelos pudieron haber venido a este país temiendo los nuevos paisajes, olores y lugares con los que se encontraron. Solo confiando en sí mismos y en aquellos que se acercaron a ellos fue como pudieron sobrevivir. La riqueza de la etnia de cada persona puede, si se permite, enriquecer a toda la comunidad.
En una época en que los medios de comunicación intentan crear una cultura homogénea, puede ser refrescante experimentar las tradiciones, los colores, las comidas, las historias, la música y los rituales de otras culturas. Ser verdaderamente católico es estar abierto a una iglesia universal con su diversidad de pueblos y culturas.
La mujer cananea que se acerca a Jesús es una mujer de profunda fe y profunda humildad. Ella no se intimida ni se aleja cuando Jesús incluso la insulta al referirse a su gente como perros. Su amor por su hija es tan profundo que ningún comentario la desanimará. Ella modela el amor de Jesús, porque por amor, Jesús soportó el insulto y la herida. Jesús no esperaba que una mujer cananea tuviera algo de valor que enseñarle, sin embargo, Jesús la felicita por su gran fe.
